🔗 Share this article The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites. When I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker. His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara. Surmounting Early Hurdles Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract. However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said. A Landmark Year and European Arrival That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named player of the tournament. A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration. Inspiration and On-Field Identity Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye. His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, having been shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes. Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted. Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham. On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line. “The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.” Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
