New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
