We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow. Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing. The initial step to check the site of where the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital. We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video. Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured. We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
