Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
