The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

Forest had previously guaranteed a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a slim possibility of making the league's elite, even though they required other matches to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident display will give the supporters belief that their side can navigate the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second shortly after – the striker squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the season.

The forward's 11th came soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the backline and then drive an effort past the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended the visitors' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a foul by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest might face either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this term with half of his eleven strikes scored in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the threat of a challenge for his place in attack could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was impressive against the opposition, producing two excellent finishes and generally being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and movement.

The forward was not alone in catching the eye, with McAtee producing his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from the champions last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give the club some renewed optimism as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added the manager.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their dedication or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
