Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create this new flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about. Longstanding Conflict Between Founders versus Corporate Owner The recent announcement escalates the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades. Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles". The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components. “I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.” This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern. Historical Activism plus Recent Changes In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories. This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return". Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions Mr. Cohen stated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever. This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism. Previously, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him." "My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
